Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the much-awaited state’s second airport at Jharsuguda and lay the foundation stone of Rs 13000-crore Talcher Fertilizer Plant revival project on September 22, Union ministers Jual Oram and Dharmendra Pradhan said
Under the Centre’s UDAN scheme, the Jharsuguda airport in the western part of the state has been developed over 909 acres with an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore. Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has recently granted it 4C Category licence needed for handling bigger aircrafts such as A320. The airport will provide the much-needed air connectivity to western Odisha with the rest of the country,” said Jual after he reviewed works of the upcoming airport in Jharsuguda
Apart from Jharsuguda, Jeypore, Rourkela, and Utkela (Kalahandi district) have been included under Centre’s regional air connectivity scheme UDAN and are under various stages of progress
Talcher Fertilizer Plant, shut since 2002, is being revived with a proposed investment of about Rs 13000 crore. Four public sector undertakings, Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), Coal India Ltd (CIL), Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd (RCF) and Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd (FCIL) have formed a joint venture to revive the plant. It is being hyped as the first coal gasification-based fertilizer plant in India, in which coal is converted into synthesis gas, which is used as fuel
Talking to reporters in Bhubaneswar, Dharmendra Pradhan said the revival of the Talcher plant will bring new employment opportunities and will usher in a new era of prosperity for Odisha. “September 22 is going to be a historic day for the energy sector in India and Odisha,” Dharmendra said
The fertilizer plant, spread over 700 acres, was established in 1970. It became a sick unit in 1991 but continued operation till 2002 amid ups and downs. The Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) closed it in 2002 citing its recurring loss
The plant is likely to be operational by 2022, official sources said. It has been allotted captive coal mine in the Talcher region and has already started mining activity to ensure steady coal supply to the plant
Coming to Odisha after a gap of four months, after he addressed a public meeting at Cuttack on the occasion of his fourth anniversary as PM on May 26, Modi will address two public meetings during his one-day visit to the state, at Jharsuguda and Talcher
